A Story of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Ground

During the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I assumed to book lodging after getting there, but upon reaching the city, a big convention was taking place and all the backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could just sleep at the airport – but quickly found the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes 24 hours. Unsure of what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I caught a city-bound bus and found myself drifting near a gaming venue, thinking I might spend those hours in a place that stayed open through the night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition to succeed at a crucial interview the following day, but as a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.

We could all use more individuals like that woman.

It seems I seemed confused because a woman saw me loitering in downtown and inquired whether I needed help. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and immediately she suggested I could sleep on a spare mattress at her university residence at ANU – an ideal turn of events, given that my the important interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided some food: one of the filled rolls she brought back her work shift. This gave me the bathroom and a secure location and safe to sleep.

In retrospect, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she undertook as a young woman allowing a male stranger who was a complete stranger stay in her room. In those days I was in my male privilege bubble and was oblivious about things like that. Now, as a father, I am astonished she offered that help – yet very grateful.

I didn’t end up study at that university, and I never saw the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me that incredible gesture of generosity. It is my wish karma has rewarded her good deed many times over. Our society requires more individuals with such compassion.
