California is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.

After a quarter-century span, no portion of the state is facing water scarcity. This significant achievement follows difficult years marked by insufficient rainfall that worsened blaze threats and challenged its huge agribusiness.

An Update Indicates An Absence of Dryness

Thursday's report from the national drought tracker confirmed that California in its entirety is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This change resulted from weeks of significant storms that replenished major reservoirs like the state's largest lakes exceeding their long-term norms.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve only known in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” noted a climate scientist.

From Intense Storms to Soggy Celebrations

Achieving this status included powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, causing extensive inundation, blackouts, and fatalities. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they did not eliminate it.

Even into late December, areas like Modoc County were still classified as unusually parched. Subsequent downpours at the start of the new year washed away those remaining dry spots.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Remains a Concern

Yet, experts warn that the end of drought status does not mean being out of the woods. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation indicate it is approximately 70 percent of the historical norm.

This frozen reservoir, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water as it runs off, is a key piece for the year ahead. Water officials stress that it is premature to make predictions for the annual water supply.

“What we are observing right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”

Even as the official status indicates no dryness, the next challenge is to preserving this hard-won hydrological health during the rest of the year.
