Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.
The gang of attackers invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, authorities reported.
The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a gun duel" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their hostel, an official report indicated.
One member of staff was lost their life while safeguarding the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.
Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.
Local residents informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.
The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.
