Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

New York police released video stills Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
