Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, responding to latest criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's response directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering hard hits on opponents. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.
What Sparked the Latest Exchange
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments following the Broncos' historic comeback victory over the Giants. Payton suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" the coach stated.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- The quarterback joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M contract.
- The Broncos finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year before the team hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
- Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.
Had Wilson stayed on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the contentious split between the player and his coach.
