Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Inclusion in England's Test Series Team
The English team has opted for a twelve-player selection just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected place.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the visiting team will wait until the day of the initial match to determine whether the venue conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are part of the selected group, indicating there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s condition.
The other seamers round out the bowling group, with Carse expected to miss out if the spinner enters the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Favor Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has hosted five previous Tests.
In those matches, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin.
Of those spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have just a handful.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers remains the probable decision.
Spin Options Weighed
Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the lower order.
However McCullum has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the series.
Earlier, Lyon described the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still the English top slow bowler.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for people who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” Lyon said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents perform and excel out here.”
