The Contents of the Case Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped within a psychic prison forged from the past of Vecna. Their mission for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a moment that potentially carries the secret to his downfall permanently.
Spoiler Warning: The following details significant events for the second part of the final season.
A Journey Into the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a telescope taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.
There, they witness a child version of Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the act involved more than a simple act of survival.
Like many elements this season, the truth about the mine shaft incident originates in the live show The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research
*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which transported a vessel into a plane known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the captain, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.
That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to give to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their parallel research. The man in the tunnel is that employee.
So, What's in the Case?
Based on what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the briefcase most likely held samples of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would later pass on to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.
Alternatively, the case could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he fights the influence of a dark entity, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the entity in the past.
The Power of Fear
Henry's enduring terror of that cave highlights how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he commands the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to gain strength.
This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a key upper hand in the ultimate battle to come.
