The royal figure relinquishes his designation as the Duke.

Royal figure under scrutiny
He has encountered increasing scrutiny over his links with the convicted sex offender.

The royal is surrendering his honors, including the Duke of York, he has declared in a personal statement.

He has been under growing attention over his links with disgraced financier Epstein, with requests for the royal household to take action against him.

That now seems to have caused the royal deciding to willingly hand back his designations and to surrender participation of the prestigious order.

In his message he said he continued to "vigorously deny the claims against me".

"In discussion with the monarch, and my immediate and broader family, we have agreed the continued claims about me take away from the responsibilities of His Majesty and the royal household," said a statement from the royal.

"I have chosen, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and nation first.

"I support my decision five years ago to withdraw from royal engagements.

"With the monarch's approval, we feel I must now go a additional measure. I will therefore no longer hold my honor or the distinctions which have been granted to me. As I have said earlier, I strongly dispute the allegations against me."

He has encountered a number of scandals, including a court case he ended with an accuser, inquiries about his economic affairs and his association with an accused intelligence operative.

He will remain a member of royalty - but will discontinue to be the the Duke, a title received from his mother, the former monarch.

He had already ceased to be a "participating figure" and had forfeited the use of his HRH title and no longer was seen at state occasions. His role now will be even more lessened.

His previous partner will be known as Sarah Ferguson and no longer Duchess of York, but their offspring will carry on to have the designation of princess.

The royal has faced strong attention over his links with convicted sex offender the financier, more in recent times including questions about when he had really cut off ties.

In his television appearance, the royal had said that he had severed all links with Jeffrey Epstein after they had been photographed together in NYC in December 2010.

But emails sent in February 2011 later surfaced indicating that the prince had confidentially remained in touch with the financier, including sending a communication: "Stay in contact and we'll play some more soon!"

There had been mounting annoyance in the monarchy at the scandals that continued to plague the figure.

Soon a book released after death by Virginia Giuffre will be issued which is expected to cast more attention on the royal's involvement with Virginia Giuffre and Jeffrey Epstein.
