What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
